A change of Scene Shang: the lush new store at Raffles Hotel
Long known for their lush modern take on Chinese-inspired furniture, Singapore brand Scene Shang has a new home. A second home, in the Raffles Hotel arcade no less, where founders Jessica Wong and Pamela Ting have opened a boutique outlet to accompany the flagship store on Beach Road.
And it’s a stunner.
The new Raffles Hotel boutique features familiar pieces such as their signature “The Banker” desk lamps, above, and award-winning stackable Shang System drawers, below, as well as new lines unique to this outlet.
Needless to say, we’ll have it all… the gorgeous art deco drinks cabinet with its walnut panels and rounded corners, the brass-legged, marble-topped side tables, the statement folding screens and, oh, we’ll pick up the Chinese brass chess set made from old automobile parts, too (it’s designed by Wendy Chua and Gustavo Maggio).
The design duo has a particular knack for reinventing the more staid elements of Chinese furniture (hello, rosewood) into effortlessly cool and endlessly desirable modern pieces (hello, rosewood!). Not least the “Yan” lounge suite, below left, with its black leather, brass accents and, yes, rosewood frame.
See, feel, ogle it for yourself: the brass gleams, the chess pieces have heft, and the drool wipes right off the leather.
