Measuring 11.89 metres long with a full beam of 3.5 metres, Rivamare has a unique presence that makes it such a memorable open yacht – and it's rooted in classic cruising.

Rare are the pairings as inseparable as Custom Line and Ferretti. With a standing fleet of more than 300 yachts sailing in the world, the collaboration has produced some of the most coveted bespoke yachts. The wallywhy200 superyacht rears up in the historic vieux port of Saint-Tropez, broad, angular and brooding in its black carbon-fibre and metallics that glint in the sun and catch the eye amidst the more conventional power yachts and sailing boats, the pastels and the cobblestones of the picturesque harbour. Drippingly chic with its teak beach-platform and elegantly arrayed daybeds framed by sharp, linear rails and mirrored black ceilings, the superyacht is almost out of place in this hedonistic Riviera hotspot, as if it belonged on set serving as a Bond villain’s pleasure barge, or in some noir future world given over to unabashed luxury and devastating design.

“The Rebel 50 G is aware of its own being and expressiveness," Italian designer Christian Grande says of his latest feat, "with an almost zoomorphic body, with features that create muscular-looking surfaces that immediately give off a feeling of power."

“The words ‘calming’ and ‘Mediterranean fresh’ cropped up a lot in our discussions and I think you can see that in the natural colour palette, fabric-lined walls, and contrasting light and dark veneers in Alpi wood composite," Nauta Design Co-Founder Massimo Gino says of the first SW108 Gelliceaux. "Everything is very easy on the eye and the overall ambiance is classy but cool, understated but sophisticated, stylish but warm.”

Collaborations between the sailing and luxury automotive industries are mostly perfect marriages. If the sun-drenched crowds at the opening day of the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show were any guide, the headwinds of inflation and a global economic slowdown haven’t deterred Australia’s yacht owners. “If anything, we’ve seen increased interest and activity since Covid, with existing owners upgrading to larger models, and newcomers getting into the market,” says Ray White Marine sales director Brock Rodwell. “We see owners trading around every three years on average, but now we have some trading as often as every 12 months.”

With a seventy-year history catering to luxury life on the high seas, furniture maison Cassina has released a 'YachtingTales' lookbook showcasing something of a cruise collection of designer decor. Back in the 1950s, Cassina pioneered the transition from artisanal to larger-scale industrial production that maintained the highest standard of quality, and so was in a unique position to fulfil large orders from prestige clients. In 1952, Cassina was appointed by the luxurious Italian transatlantic liner, SS Andrea Doria, to fit out the vessel, and would inadvertently become the first design house to export Italian furniture chic to the United States.

The nautical conventions of superyachting have long been established. Owners procure their ideal vessel, add their personal touches and proceed to traverse the world’s oceans in absolute opulence and style.

In a sea of distinguished superyacht choices, there are countless ways to explore the open waters in opulence. One of the more prominent names in the industry is Sanlorenzo, an Italian shipyard that’s been in the game of crafting high-quality motor yachts since 1958. Their latest offering is the SP110, the first model of the brand new open series by Sanlorenzo which delivers the best performance at the lowest fuel consumption.

The world’s earliest superyachts first began their voyage at the beginning of the 20th century. It was a pivotal era in nautical history where affluent individuals constructed large private yachts for personal pleasure as opposed to commercial use.

Although the shipyard was founded in 1842, the legend of Riva was truly born in the mid-20th Century, during Italy’s so-called Dolce Vita era. The founder’s great-grandson, Carlo Riva, saw that demand existed among the ascendant ‘jet set’ for high-speed, nimble pleasurecraft that brought the style, craftsmanship and performance of an Italian sports car to the waterways. 

There’s nothing so certain to stir a sense of joie de vivre as setting sail on a superyacht. So it’s surprising to see many yacht owners decorate their vessels in a manner that can only be described as joyless.

“People are no longer seeing yachts as luxury transportation, but more as a home with global mobility,” says Vitelli, speaking to a trend shaped both by the rise in demand for safe, intimate and open spaces, as well as by the ever more indulgent and home-like yachts on offer. Not least, this latest arrival from Benetti: the Motopanfilo 37M.
