Amber Park

Stealing the limelight with its sky terrace that spans three towers in a move reminiscent of Marina Bay Sands, Amber Park is set to dominate the East Coast skyline. Rising up from the former Amber Gardens site, this is the most premium new build on highly desirable Amber Road. Residences are light-filled, with double-height ceilings and luxe interiors – homeowners here will indulge in the sense of space, out-there facilities and unbeatable views including the sea. Water views are also on the agenda, but what also gets us excited is the huge plot of land. The site area is 140,758sq ft – which means plenty of room for stunning facilities and beautiful gardens.

While the outlook is stunning, there’s much to enjoy on the ground: 75% of the site is dedicated to greenery and impressive amenities including three pools and a beach house. A private gate leads to East Coast Park for walks along the beach, cycling or relaxed, open-air dining.

East Coast neighbourhood guide

What to love

The dining and boutique shopping scene in Katong and Joo Chiat has evolved into one of the most unique areas to immerse yourself in, with new providores, gourmet grocers butchers and wine bars springing up to add to the neighbourhood’s appeal.

Iconic local scenes include the pastel-coloured row of shophouses along Koon Seng Road in Joo Chiat, vibrant murals and colourful kueh. And, of course, there are all the benefits of urban coastal living, starting with the famous beaches and parks…

Green spaces

If you want the freedom to cycle all the way to the city, jog through greenery or by the water, or spend sunny days with the kids at the beach, East Coast Park will be a huge part of your life when you move to D15. A major drawcard for families, athletes and those seeking time out in nature, East Coast Park is incredibly close to Meyer Road. Our inside tip: the condos along this renowned strip have direct access to underpasses leading to the Park, so keep a close eye on the Meyer Road new launches. A 15km nature trail stretching from Gardens by the Bay to Changi is also in the works, set to open in 2021.

There are, of course, plenty of lovely neighbourhood parks in the area. Meyer Road Playground has just had a makeover, courtesy of award-winning landscapers Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl who are designing the beautiful grounds at MeyerHouse. Katong Park, on the corner of Meyer and Fort Roads, was formerly the site of Fort Tanjong Katong and loved by locals for its leafy dog run and beautiful heritage tree. The park is currently on hiatus while the forthcoming MRT Katong Park MRT station is being built.

Shopping and lifestyle

Katong and Joo Chiat just keep getting better when it comes to unique fashion boutiques and homewares. Start at the East Coast Rd end of Joo Chiat Rd, where you’ll find quirky lifestyle store Cat Socrates, followed by Singapore Trading Post and beautifully curated fashion and lifestyle store The AC.

One of the first standout boutiques in the neighbourhood, The Wyld Shop offers an eclectic range of fashion, homewares, accessories and art, while across the road, Lim’s Holland Village has opened an East Coast outpost with its signature blend of Asian decor. Find the time to walk all the way up to Joo Chiat place: you’ll come across designer vintage pieces from Europe and New York at A Vintage Tale, jewelry from Paris, Indian block-printed quilts and an excellent mix of homewares and fashion at La Tienda, and more unique finds from around the world at Tiger and Arcadia, including Bedouin carpets and tableware from Egypt. If it’s Asian antiques you’re after, browse the two storeys at China House for a standout piece.

Locals have been eagerly anticipating the return of i12 mall, which has been undergoing extended renovations and is set to reopen later in 2021, reportedly with the likes of PS. Cafe, Cold Storage CS Fresh and Scoops Wholefoods in the mix.

Parkway Parade in Marine Parade is still a local favourite for its mix including Marks & Spencer and Isetan, while nearby Kinex on Tanjong Katong Rd offers more dining options, homewares and fashion.

East Coast cafes and restaurants

East Coast Road has been upping the ante for Katong’s cafe-loving crowd, with the introduction of Micro Bakery and Cafe, Brawn & Brains Coffee and Forty Hands. You’ll find French restaurants, Japanese, Thai and impressive Indian restaurants along this ever-evolving strip. Of course, there are neighbourhood classics including 328 Katong Laksa, The Original Katong Laksa in Roxy Square and traditional kueh and nyonya dumplings at Kim Choo.

On Joo Chiat Rd, you’ll find excellent cafes Homeground, Choice Cuts and C Cafe, with Braseiro steakhouse, Burger Frites and vegan favourite Loving Hut further up alongside local institution Thunder Tea Rice and authentic Vietnamese restaurant Long Phung.

Further up East Coast Road, Siglap is turning into a solid spot for cafes: from Penny University to Five Oars. Restaurant-wise, there’s fantastic Mexican, Spanish and even Moroccan dining spots to enjoy. Also in this area, in East Coast Park, you’ll find the famous East Coast Seafood Centre – who can resist a feast of chilli crab and bamboo clams by the water?

Gourmet groceries and more

Locals have never been more spoilt for choice when it comes to premium produce and groceries. Long-time favourites Oh Deli and Foodie Marketplace have been joined by the excellent Butcher Box on Joo Chiat Rd and the charming East Coast Grocers, which has an interesting mix of international condiments, fresh produce and flowers and well chosen selection of homewares. Of course, the arrival of Little Farms in the neighbourhood means even more international cheeses, premium groceries, health foods and vegan-friendly foods are readily available to locals.

Leisure offerings

The 15km stretch of East Coast Park has its own leisure enclaves for all ages. Towards the Bedok end you’ll find Xtreme SkatePark – the country’s first international standard skate park — which has long been a favourite with adventurous kids and teens. Advanced thrillseekers will appreciate having Singapore Wake Park nearby; it’s the country’s only cable -ski park built in a lagoon at Singapore East Coast Park.

For less daring play and closer to the D15 condos, there’s Marine Cove with its epic playground and cluster of family-friendly dining spots. The ongoing redevelopment of East Coast Park also included a major makeover for the former Big Splash site, which re-opened in March 2021 as Coastal PlayGrove. Gone are the original water slides, but families will love the water play for the younger ones, the climbing nets in Singapore’s tallest outdoor play feature and incredible tube slides that stretch up to 12m long.

On Amber Rd, there’s the Chinese Swimming Club, or swimming lessons available at Katong Swimming Complex.

Kids can play at the creative indoor place space Kaboodle at Katong Square, or explore the excellent art installations at The Artground at Goodman Arts Centre. Here, there are creative workshops and pottery lessons for all ages.

Co-working options include Spaces and the forthcoming Joo Chiat outpost of Crane Club – a members’ club and co-working haven that’s renowned for its excellent cultural programme.

Family life and schools

This pocket of Singapore seems to be made for young families: parents are spoilt for choice with preschools including Brighton Montessori and Monstessori for Children, alongside a wealth of enrichment centres to nurture little ones.

Trusted schools in the area include Kong Hwa School and Tanjong Katong Primary, alongside Chung Cheng High School and Dunman High School. As for international schools, you’ll find EtonHouse Preschool and International School and Canadian International School.
