Explore the hidden intricacies of the Great Barrier Reef like never before

By Mike Huynh

As the holiday season commences around the world, there’s no better place to escape the daily rush than Australia’s breathtaking Great Barrier Reef during the pristine summer season.

To see one of the most spectacular wonders of the world through a unique lens requires something special though. Scenic Eclipse II is that special name, the first commercial cruise operator to offer a premium submersible experience in the majestic Great Barrier Reef of Queensland, Australia.

This ultra-luxury experience will deliver a safe and memorable excursion like no other through the introduction of the company’s new state-of-the-art submersible, Scenic Neptune II, aboard the Scenic Eclipse II Discovery Yacht.

The onboard submersible is custom-designed in collaboration with the proven Triton Submarines, an American manufacturer which was founded in 2007 and stands as the only manufacturer today to achieve Full Ocean Depth certification. Scenic Neptune II features the latest technology, accommodating up to eight guests and an expert pilot. The submersible will deliver captivating discovery excursions into the remarkable World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.

With the ability to dive up to a safe depth of 200 metres below the water’s surface, Scenic Neptune II’s spacious interior and crystal-clear acrylic sphere will do the rest in providing unrestricted views for passengers. This means guests get to experience complete immersion in the mesmerising vistas beneath the surface teaming with vibrant sea life.

Submersible safety always comes first

Safety needs to remain at the forefront of any submersible vessel and the Scenic Neptune II prides itself on this factor.

Its system features comprehensive Safe Return to Surface procedures and multiple fail-safes built into the submersible design. Beyond this, the Scenic Eclipse II yacht will be operating in protected marine environments, such as the Great Barrier Reef, and it has many innovative technical features. This includes GPS Dynamic Positioning that can hold the ship in position, negating the need to drop anchor on ecologically sensitive seabeds.

For improved efficiency and sustainability, there’s an Advance Azipod propulsion system which minimises noise and vibration to reduce disturbance, improve maneuverability and reduce fuel consumption. There’s also the addition of the latest wastewater treatment systems to protect marine life.
