Maserati unveils its latest addition to the Folgore range with the electrified GranCabrio

Maserati seems to be taking its ‘balance of opposites’ to its natural, electrified conclusion. On Folgore Day, where the Modena-based manufacturer celebrated its evolution, it officially ushered in its future by launching the all-electric GranCabrio, taking yet another step toward its larger, long-term plans.

It was only early 2024 that Maserati announced that its entire Trident range should be fully electrified by the year 2028. The new GranCabrio looks to punctuate the lineup, joining the likes of the GranTurismo, Grecale and by 2025, the highly anticipated MC20.

From the initial looks of it, the GranCabrio Folgore remains true to its classic proportions and its ‘Italian styling’ cues. The main difference between this and its ICE counterpart is that front grille, which feels more slated and a bit more futuristic with the wind deflector. Nevertheless, the iconic Maserati mug is still present and as glorious as ever.

Much of the GranCabrio Folgore’s performance isn’t compromised by the electric reconfiguration. Maserati promises that the supercar can reach 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, only a millisecond difference between its coupe sister.

This is due, in large part, to the 90-kg weight difference in the extra steel of the chassis. The GranCabrio can also produce up to 1350 Nm of torque. This is complemented by a ‘MaxBoost’ mode that offers the vehicle even more power.

In the GranCabrio Folgore, riders enjoy three electric motors, powered by 92.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack borrowed from Formula E. Charging infrastructure allow AC charging up to 22 kW and DC charging up to 270 kW. Maserati puts its range at a decent 447 km, a few shades lower than the GranTurismo’s 455-km range.

The drop-top vehicle’s interior maintains the same thermal and acoustic comfort as its sibling. Much like the latter, the 12.2-inch digital instrument pane and 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system provide more than reliable companions on the road. Another touchscreen for climate control should ensure optimal comfort at all times. But of course, top-down cruising will always be the GranCabrio’s strong suit. Once a convertible, always a convertible, after all.
