Jacob and Co Opera Godfather Watch

Jacob & Co’s Opera Godfather Musical Watch is the pinnacle of high watchmaking

Most have come to associate Jacob & Co with lavishly radical watchmaking. Each piece is an exercise in bold complications using traditional methods. Its Opera Godfather Musical Watch is no different. This limited-edition release, with its mechanical musical box and triple-axis gravitational tourbillon, enjoys the quintessential features of a definitive Jacob & Co classic.

It was only a year ago that Jacob & Co released the heralded Opera Godfather 50th Anniversary Watch in Sicily. The watch was a compendium of visual and technical refinement, whose sides are adorned with a myriad references to the cult film. Partnering once more with Paramount Consumer Products, the brand looks to follow the success of its previous $500,000 watch with the new Opera Godfather Musical Watch. From the looks of it, it seems to be of the same ultra-luxe character.

The Opera Godfather makes use of the bespoke complication of two rotating cylinders, totaling about 36 teeth that turn against two combs. Its chiming mechanisms are emblematic of the brand’s most daring designs in haute horlogerie. The rarest types of audible complications are present here. This, in turn, plays The Godfather theme music, comprising of a melody of 120 notes.

A single press on the pusher situated at the 10 o’clock position of the case initiates all this and sets over 600 components into motion. The 658-component JCFM04 movement, on the other hand, reveals itself in the entire movement and dial assembly, performing a rotation of 120 degrees. Beautifully integrated, too, in the music box are the keys of the 18K gold, black lacquered piano contact the pins of the cylinder. This feature allows the keys to move as the music plays for a more animate effect.

Complementing the grand musical box is the triple-axis gravitational tourbillion. Jacob & Co ingeniously reinterprets the 224-year-old tourbillion here as a ultra-modern organ of mechanical prowess.

Comprising of about 104 components, the triple-axis tourbillon of the Opera Godfather allows the assembly to rotate on three axes simultaneously. A full rotation on the first axis takes 24 seconds, on the second axis, eight seconds, and the on the third, 30 seconds. This constellation is a charming horological wonder.

As for the Opera Godfather’s case, case back, and lug structure, owners get to choose between 18K Rose Gold or Black DLC Grade 5 Titanium finishing. A front crystal dome accentuates the incredible construction ever so fluidly.

On the side of the case, transparent sapphire presents the viewer with a fascinating look at various angles of the JCFM04 calibre. The 18K gold winding crank on the case, meanwhile, is remade in the shape of a violin instead of the traditional crown. It is with the same crank that the watch charges its power reserve – a self-sustaining opera of sorts.

The Opera Godfather Musical Watch is available in rose gold, black DLC Grade 5 Titanium, Rose Gold Diamond Barrels, and Baguette Diamonds on Case. A celebration of one of Jacob & Co’s most prestigious lines, the timepiece retails for approximately AU$ 594,736. Rare, after all, is the statement timepiece that sings as magnificently as this.
