Ricky Ponting’s landmark Brighton estate comes up for sale
Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting and his wife Rianna are selling their landmark family home on Brighton’s prestigious Golden Mile.
Built in the 1920s, the magnificent seven-bedroom ‘Shandford’ is a classically beautiful home on a sweeping corner block of some 1900 sqm with a pool, tennis court and charming grounds and gardens that evoke true old-school appeal.
As one of Brighton’s founding estates, ‘Shandford’ once occupied a significant sweep of the prestigious precinct. And, to this day, it has retained an invaluable piece of that original holding – its own gated pathway at the end of Shandford Avenue that provides private access to the waterfront.
The superb proportions and marvellous detail expected of a significant home of its era are everywhere – from the grand entrance foyer, elegant formal rooms and impressive timber-panelled study through to the suite of seven wonderfully oversized bedrooms which span the first and second floors and enjoy wonderful views.
Just enough modernity has been injected as well. The kitchen is modern and superbly appointed with a butler’s pantry. There is an expansive cinema ideal for movie buffs and sports fans.
Agents Michael Gibson and Robert Fletcher estimate the price range at $14.8 million to $16 million.
“Landmark residences like this, especially in such a recognised blue-chip address, have a really broad appeal,” said Mr Gibson.
“It’s a property that has exceptional provenance but there is also potential for its next owners to further curate to their needs.”
“Shandford’ is already one of Brighton’s landmarks but it could evolve from here to become one of Australia’s true residential trophies, and we expect that will excite a lot of people.”
The couple agree the property’s biggest drawcard is its grand scale. “We have a huge front yard and a U-shaped driveway, a huge tree in the front,” Ricky says. “It’s been an incredible place to entertain whether it’s Christmas, or Australia Day barbecues which we are most renowned for.”
