Sullivans Cove unveils the 24-year-old single malt whisky from the final “lost cask”
Some years ago, Sullivans Cove discovered five casks from the distillery’s earlier days in a remote area in Tasmania, which were considered lost to time. Four of these casks were released in 2020 as a 21-year-old vatted expression, leaving the final cask to mature longer.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Sullivans Cove finally releases the expression from the fifth “lost cask,” in the 24-year-old single malt HB0085.
This whisky is distilled in September 1997 and carefully nurtured and transferred into an American oak, ex-Bourbon finishing cask, allowing the liquid to mature gracefully, while also adding another depth of flavour. It is decanted in September 2022 and bottled at 49.6% ABV.
The HB0085 boasts different layers of character and sophistication, with notes of ginger combined with strawberry musk and ripe watermelon warming the nose. Hints of artichoke and olive brine also adds depth to it, enriched by warm spices, as well as a creamy touch of panettone and raspberry coulis.
The whisky coats the palate with an incredibly thick and velvety texture, opened by notes of apple and pear juice, followed by bursts of kiwi, guava and raspberry. Rich banana and mango milkshake also adds to its indulgence, which are then balanced with hints of sweet grain and custard tart.
Finishing the experience are amazing flavours created by a balance of candied orange peel, with honeyed whole-grain cereal soaked in milk. It lingers on the palate with hints of banana liqueur, rounded by anise, coffee crema, and the warmth of crostoli.
The HB0085 is available in a limited release of just 132 bottles. Visit Sullivans Cove for more information.
