Symphony for the modern traveller: Rolex’s new Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller arrives in stunning fashion

In only about a decade since its debut, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller has quickly transformed itself into one of the most revered watches in recent memory. It’s one of the most complicated watches released under the Rolex name in the modern age, combining the perks of the annual calendar and GMT functions. If the beloved GMT-Master was built for the pilot, then this timepiece is handcrafted with the traveller in mind.

It is as visually stunning as it is technically sound, as is the case in Rolex’s 2024 Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller. What stands out initially is, yes, that elegant new bracelet. For the first time ever, the timepiece has been fitted with a Jubilee bracelet in precious metal, crafted in two versions: the first in everose gold with a slate dial and the second in yellow gold with a white dial.

Rolex’s ceramic inserts inside the links offer an added sense of flexibility on the wrist. The five-piece link metal bracelet was specifically created for the iconic Oyster Perpetual Datejust, which first introduced in 1945. Compared to the Oyster’s three-piece link, this authors a more supple character.

Meanwhile, the waterproof 42-mm Oyster case remains a symbol of robustness. The sapphire crystal benefits from an anti-reflecting coating and features a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easier reading. Its case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool, and is edged with fine fluting.

Equally impressive is the Sky-Dweller’s barrel architecture and patented Chronergy escapement. Debuting only a year ago, calibre 9002 boasts a self-winding mechanical movement that was conceptualised as a ‘distillation of technology’.

A Rolex overcoil ensures the calibre’s regularity in any position. Supporting this is an oscillator mounted on Paraflex shock absorbers. These enhancements guarantee precision, reliability and peerless resistance at all times.

Of all things, the beauty of the Sky-Dweller is in its innovative display, which allows two time zones to work simultaneously, thanks to a patented mechanism. Saros, the annual calendar, automatically differentiates between 30- and 31-day months, as well. This is only complemented by the Ring Command system, providing wearers with the freedom to select and set each function as they move from one region to another.
