Rimowa’s Hammerschlag collection is a modern reinterpretation of a 1966 classic
Rimowa is often associated with elevated travel and for good reason. As one of the oldest German luggage brands around, it would continue to reshape the industry throughout its 125-year existence. In 1937, for instance, it would pioneer the aluminum suitcase and from there, the Maison would go on to produce some quintessential designs.
In the case of the Hammerschlag (German for ‘hammer hit’), this particular piece became iconic for its time thanks to its distinct textured aluminum surface. The classic design from 1966 is complemented by a leather handle and a unique metal handle ridge, functioning as both a traveller’s trusted companion and a one-of-a-kind accessory.
Its concept is in the middle of a renaissance, as Rimowa introduces the reinterpreted Hammerschlag Hand-Carry Case, together with the brand’s newest addition, the Hammerschlag Cabin. The launch of this collection is centered around the realm of music, emphasised in the cases’ pattern, reminiscent of the rhythmic motions of piano keys.
The series features new functionalities while maintaining the image of its original 1966 archival design. This homage is most evident in the Hammerschlag cabin’s hammered aluminum case, which is paired with the rendition of its original leather handle in cognac leather.
Likewise, the Hammerschlag Hand-Carry Case features the same design, albeit with a different interior finish. Noting its inspiration from the original, the Hand-Carry Case is adorned with two hooks and a handy curved leather-made zipped compartment. Rimowa basically reimagined the 1966 classic for the modern age: authoritative in appearance, smooth and easy in functionality.
