Penhaligon’s reshapes itself in the image of the Wood Dragon

When Penhaligon’s releases a fragrance, it does so with a certain visual and narrative flare. The ‘Portrait’s series, for instance, is a humourous reinterpretation of symbols, mostly animals and fictional characters, in the British aristocracy. Designer Kristjana Williams has a hand in it, too, complementing the fragrances with a nature-inspired vintage ornate touch. Couple that with a distinct tongue-in-cheek voice and eclectic charm, and one gets a flourishing Maison of timeless appeal.

Among its most cherished fragrances is the The World According to Arthur. It was only added to the Penhaligon’s prestigious Portraits collection about two years ago. In the spirit of the Lunar New Year, The World According to Arthur resurfaces anew as a homage to the Year of the Wood Dragon. As the brand puts it, “Now, Arthur is reaching for a new Celestial Empire: one that shall take his spiritual co-efficient perceptibly higher… Tonight, this gentle warrior leaves his sweet-scented garden of sage wisdom and wit.”

Named after the warrior King, he is depicted as a dragon by way of those iconic Penhaligon’s bottle caps. But perhaps its most dazzling quality remains the nuances in its composition. It’s an exquisite scent that authors a spicier, smoked opening with top notes of Vanilla, Incense, and Grapefruit. Complementing these are hints of Clary Sage, ambrette, and Tonka Bean.

The World According to Arthur also joins the British perfume house’s Lucky Portraits Scent Library for this season. This special Lunar New Year offering provides some of its most famous fragrances in a packaged set, including other perennial favorites Lord George, Lady Blanche, The Inimitable William Penhaligon, and Changing Constance. Individuals who purchase any 75ml and 100ml fragrances from the highly coveted collection even receive a twilly scarf and limited-edition dragon-shaped charm. A ‘self-fulfilling prophecy’ awaits those who are looking for ‘Arthur,’ as Penhaligon’s says.
