Roger Dubuis celebrates three decades of horological ingenuity by launching two new timepieces

Since 1995, Roger Dubuis has pursued its vision of horological excellence by crafting timepieces that are both boldly designed and mechanically complex—watches that stand apart in the world of haute horlogerie.

Just a year after its founding, the Geneva maison unveiled the Hommage and Sympathie collections, along with its first watch featuring the now-iconic Biretrograde display—an ingenious layout that would come to define the brand’s mechanical creativity.

Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Roger Dubuis pays tribute to three decades of innovation, from tourbillons and perpetual calendars to the grandest of complications, with the launch of two remarkable timepieces: the Excalibur Biretrograde Calendar and the Excalibur Grande Complication.

The Excalibur Biretrograde Calendar reinterprets the spirit of the original 1996 model, pairing heritage design with contemporary finesse. Certified by the Poinçon de Genève—a hallmark reserved for the highest standards of craftsmanship—the 40mm timepiece is rendered in 18-carat pink gold with a white mother-of-pearl dial. Its dual retrograde calendar arcs mirror the expressive scales of the 1996 iteration, widening toward the edge and tapering gracefully toward the centre. A small seconds counter at 6 o’clock anchors the symmetry, while the maison’s stamp at 12 o’clock lends an elegant sense of balance.

Beneath the surface, the watch is powered by the automatic calibre RD840, a hand-polished movement offering a 60-hour power reserve. The movement is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, revealing an openworked oscillating weight and the refined finishing for which Roger Dubuis is known.

As a personal touch, and an ode to the maison’s founders, Roger Dubuis and Carlos Dias, a gold ring at the back bears a hand-engraved inscription: “C’est une montre actuelle, inspirée mais pas soumise au passé, qui se projette dans un futur qui nous appartient.” This translates to: “This is a watch of today, inspired but not restricted to the past, projected into a future that belongs to us.”

If the Biretrograde Calendar embodies the maison’s aesthetic restraint, the Excalibur Grande Complication showcases its mechanical audacity. This 45mm masterpiece houses four major complications within a single architecture: a biretrograde calendar, a perpetual calendar, a minute repeater and a flying tourbillon with double micro-rotors.

The perpetual calendar automatically accounts for the varying lengths of months and leap years, requiring no adjustment until the year 2100. The minute repeater, one of watchmaking’s most demanding mechanisms, chimes the hours, quarters and minutes with crystalline precision—its sound engineered through meticulous case construction and resonance tuning. The flying tourbillon, meanwhile, reduces friction and enhances chronometric performance, while the dual micro-rotors ensure efficient winding without obstructing the view of the movement’s intricate layering.

At the heart of the watch beats the Calibre RD118, delivering a 60-hour power reserve. Its 684 components are finished by hand using a wide range of decorative techniques—each edge bevelled and surfaces polished or satin-brushed to perfection. This exceptional level of finishing earns the timepiece the coveted Poinçon de Genève certification, and also guarantees the calibre’s origin, functionality, and impeccable chronometric standards.

Both timepieces were first showcased during the 2025 edition of the Geneva Watch Week.
