McLaren LT series: Ten years, six icons, and one ‘Longtail’ legacy

Ten years ago, exactly March 2015, McLaren introduced the LT series. The marque set out to create a supercar that not only outperformed its rivals but also surpassed its own previous achievements—something more track-focused and aggressive, lightweight yet comfortable, and highly exclusive.

Thus, the McLaren 675LT was born—the first supercar to carry the ‘Longtail’ name.

The 675LT was based on the marque’s series-production 650S, a sports car derived from one of McLaren’s F1 racing variants.

Unlike the F1 model, the 650S was designed for everyday driving. While its performance impressed, it lacked the lightweight build and visceral thrill of its predecessor—prompting McLaren to develop the LT series: a supercar both track-focused and road-capable.

The 675LT redefined supercar benchmarks, featuring revised turbochargers, lighter internals—bringing the weight down to just 1,230 kg—and a sharper, more aggressive tune. Despite sharing its engine with the 650S, the LT delivered an increased power of 675 PS and torque of 700 Nm, allowing the car to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds, which is 0.1 second faster than its predecessor.

It also features an active ‘Longtail’ rear wing, which not only adds to its aesthetic, more aggressive appeal, but also adds more downforce to enhance high-speed stability and track-focused performance.

Limited to just 500 models, the McLaren 675LT immediately became a fan favourite.

Its popularity led McLaren to produce the model in both coupe and convertible Spider variants. It was then followed by the creation of the 600LT and 765LT models, which are also offered in both forms.

After 10 years, McLaren have already produced a total of six LT models, all heralding the track-focused performance and aggressive yet comfortable appeal of the first variant.

McLaren celebrates a decade of the LT’s success, introducing a year-long programme of owner engagement and retailer activities with the ‘Celebrate LT’. This initiative is tailored to appeal to the marque’s clientele, which includes an exclusive LT content that will only be initially available to LT owners.

Additionally, customers and fans alike will be invited to participate in activities hosted by McLaren retailers worldwide throughout the year, which includes open days, meet-ups and exclusive McLaren owner drive events, to mark the ten years since the inception of the six iconic cars that wear the LT badge.
