GT reimagined: The McLaren GTS is a lightweight behemoth
When the McLaren GT first arrived, it impressed drivers because the British carmaker managed to create a real GT from a mid-engine high performance platform. McLaren looks to replicate the same success with the new GTS, the GT’s successor. It not only offers a revamped look but also bears distinct stylistic and driving characteristics synonymous only with the McLaren signature.
“The new McLaren GTS offers an unmatched blend of McLaren driving dynamics and performance, with refinement and practicality,” McLaren Automotive CEO Michael Leiters explains. “When you want a true supercar driving experience, the GTS delivers that; when you want to relax on a longer journey with luggage for a weekend away, the GTS is an ideal companion. This is a car that is true to McLaren’s racing DNA but with multiple layers of ability.”
It’s a supercar that retains much of the same aerodynamic package and profile albeit a more strikingly muscular exterior. Its “hammerhead” signature styling has been updated with a new lower front bumper section, featuring newly sculpted air intakes. Complementing this are taller air scoops on the rear fenders and the redesigned front end and rear fenders that offer greater airflow into the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
Being the lightest car in its class, the new GTS is capable of reaching a top speed of 326 kmph. Its power-to-weight ratio is enabled by lightweight carbon fibre construction centred on a unique monocoque chassis. With a seven-speed SSG transmission, owners are guaranteed smooth, seamless and rapid shifts in default-from-start-up Comfort mode. This ensures relaxing yet brisk acceleration for its drivers.
Meanwhile, driving modes like Sport and Track by way of the Active Dynamic Panel introduce faster and more aggressive gearshifts all the while maximising the performance of the gearbox with minimal loss of torque.
On the other hand, elements like the electro-hydraulic steering system, powerful carbon ceramic braking system, and proactive damping control are retained to optimise the mid-mounted position of the V8 engine and car’s architecture. The steering also delivers a level of feedback unheard of in its class: its system automatically increases the level of assistance at low speeds. All these are added to increase the driving pleasure.
The new McLaren GTS is available in an extended and refreshed palette of exterior paints. These include Mantis Green, Tanzanite Blue and Ice White, and its newest reiteration, Lava Grey. Further additions, such as a new 10-spoke Turbine lightweight forged alloy wheel is also available in Silver, Gloss Black, Gloss Black with Diamond Cut effect, and Orum. Initial deliveries are set to arrive in 2024.
