Macallan celebrates 200 years of milestones with the Time: Space Collection

The Macallan is celebrating its 200 years with two new expressions that pay homage to the craft of whisky making. With it comes the Time: Space Collection, which, as Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell says, is unique in the sense that it takes individuals into a journey through time. The distillery selected two whiskies that look at its storied past and would lay the foundation for future whisky makers and consumers alike.

This limited-edition release introduces the oldest whisky the Macallan has ever produced to the public, as well as a newly minted expression that embraces the complexity and depth of the brand’s rich 200-year history. The vessel that houses the two bottles is designed with two chambers: the first is for the 1940 vintage and the second is for a 2018 vintage from Macallan’s first-ever whisky from its new distillery.

Representing the Macallan’s past, the 1940 single malt Scotch whisky comes from two hand-chosen casks that have been seasoned with sherry in Jerez de la Frontera, and was matured peacefully surrounded by nature in Speyside, Scotland. The first-fill American Oak Butt and second-fill European Oak Butt lead to an extraordinary blend, as seen in its natural color, exceptional depth and richness and full, long-lasting flavour.

Meanwhile, the other single malt expression is found in the central chamber. This expression was made during the Macallan’s transition to a new distillery. “For the 2018 vintage, the prospect of selecting a younger cask created a lot of excitement in the sample room – it is an opportunity to give others an insight into The Macallan’s future,” Campbell adds.

Both whiskies are displayed in an oak sculpture that was also customised to accentuate the natural colour of the whisky. Likewise, alternate layers of American oak and European oak have been selected to craft the display sculpture, as part of the brand’s commitment to sherry seasoned oak casks.

“The introduction of Time: Space Collection is an incredible way to pay respect to our 200th anniversary by celebrating the significance of those who have come before us, yet it is also a symbol of anticipation of what is to come, as we build upon our heritage and look to times ahead,” Jaume Ferras, Creative Director at the Macallan, explains.
