The interview: Rosi Fernandez, managing director of La Prairie ANZ, on International Women’s Day
The workforce today is a far cry from the one Rosi Fernandez, managing director of La Prairie ANZ, entered some 25 years ago. “When I had my son, the workplace was not engineered to support working mothers. Juggling career and motherhood was challenging, to say the least,” she says. “I feel proud to see that this new generation of women is more assertive and comfortable.”
In the span of 25 years, Fernandez has personally seen how industry dynamics have become more inclusive towards women, accommodating a variety of management styles. “When I was promoted, I was clear on my vision of leadership,” says Fernandez. “This consisted of creating a culture of respect, trust, genuine care, and a desire to listen to people. At the time, I thought this was simplistic and the norm. With more experience, I have realised that this is a skill in itself.”
Part of her vision was to provide opportunities for more women to excel in their chosen disciplines. One such initiative is the La Prairie Art Award, which has become a powerful platform for emerging female artists in Australia.
Fernandez notes that the contemporary art world and the contemporary woman of today are intrinsically intertwined. “It marks the continued commitment of La Prairie to empower the community of young women artists through inspiration and experience during their residency.”
The executive delights in how La Prairie’s philosophy has changed together with the times, as well. “The industry has shifted away from having a standard look of beauty to celebrating differences. In my opinion, it’s the best change that the industry has had.
“We’ve moved on from what used to be considered superficial needs,” she claims. “It has evolved to understand that confidence and health are essential for overall well-being and longevity. The focus on health rather than flawless perfection must continue.”
In April, Fernandez is proud to announce that the La Prairie Group is even welcoming the arrival of a new female CEO, Estelle Letang. “We have diversity at all levels now. The majority female executive committee and CEO marks a new milestone in the La Prairie history.”
