Hennessy partners with an iconic designer to bring high fashion to cognac
The name ‘Kim Jones’ needs no introduction in the world of high fashion. From Louis Vuitton to Alexander McQueen to Alfred Dunhill, Jones is a bonafide stalwart amongst fashion’s most elite creatives in the 21st century.
It’s this prestigious status that has brought Hennessy together with Jones to create something truly special and iconic in the realm of fine cognac: The Hennessy X.O Limited Edition and the Hennessy X.O x Kim Jones Masterpiece.
Inspired by Hennessy and the 150-year history of Hennessy X.O, the world-renowned Artistic Director broke with convention to pioneer the concept of marrying high fashion, science and cognac. And the result is nothing short of breathtaking.
“I love it when people bring me ideas I haven’t seen, I find that extremely exciting,” he explains.
“I grew up seeing a lot of the world. For me, that was something that has taught me a lot about how cultures were different, how cultures could be similar, and how the world seemed very large.”
This outlook has contributed to Jones’ avant-garde approach to design across the landscape.
“Storytelling is very important for me regardless of what I’m designing or who I’m collaborating with – I want my designs to educate and inspire people through the stories they tell,” he says.
“I’m interested in the best of the best, and as you know, Hennessy are the best in making cognac, so to rebrand it in a certain way is always interesting. For me, that’s always the challenge and something I like to rise to.
“That’s what makes things authentic, what makes things the best. The cross-correlation – pollination of looking at fashion and combining it. I take something I’ve learned from one discipline and bring it to the next.”
The statement duo
The Kim Jones and Hennessy partnership will culminate in a duo of creations. The first collaborative piece features a limited edition ‘ready-to-wear’ version of the masterpiece carafe specially imagined by Kim Jones. The Hennessy X.O Limited Edition encased in an aluminium second skin, stays true to the iconic shape of Hennessy X.O while adding a striking couture silhouette reminiscent of the era’s high fashion.
On the tasting profile front, Hennessy has worked tirelessly to ensure provenance and pedigree in every drop. In 1870, Maurice Hennessy, the 4th-generation member of the Hennessy family, created a special cognac for his family and friends. This new style of long-aged, “Extra Old” cognac would become the original and emblematic icon of the Maison – a complex blend to transcend time. Hennessy X.O showcases this deep, powerful and balanced flavour structure to ensure an intriguing sensation on the palate via seven distinct tasting notes.
The second creation from the partnership comes in the form of the sculptural Hennessy X.O x Kim Jones Masterpiece crafted using 3D printing technology and finished by hand. The striking art piece features a detailed cognac-hued ombre, an effect inspired by the shades of eaux-de-vie, while the cognac itself is extracted using the pipette designed by Kim Jones.
