Fisher & Paykel brings seamless design to The House at Lizard Island

The House at Lizard Island is the result of a four-year project to create a residence that could stand as both refuge and landmark on the Great Barrier Reef. Conceived by Brisbane architects JDA Co with owners Steve and Jane Wilson, the property was designed to respond to its exposed location while offering a refined interior experience. Board-formed concrete walls and perforated copper blades form a protective shell against cyclonic winds, while inside, natural materials and a curated collection of artworks reflect the spirit of the island.

At the centre of the house sits the kitchen, designed as both a gathering place and a working space for visiting chefs. Here, Fisher & Paykel’s integrated appliances play a defining role. Ovens, refrigeration and a wine cabinet are hidden within ceramic-clad cabinetry, preserving the sculptural quality of the space while allowing it to function with complete flexibility. The emerald quartzite island, curving like a reef form, is the focal point, while the technology remains discreetly in the background until required.

Across two levels, three bedrooms each frame a distinct view—Cooks Look mountain, Hibiscus Beach and Attenborough Beach. A spiral stairwell, crowned by an oculus, connects the floors and tracks the patterns of the sun and moon.

Downstairs, a second living space offers a sheltered retreat, contrasting with the openness of the main living and dining area upstairs, where retractable windows open the room directly to the Coral Sea.

The design is deeply tied to place. JDA Co worked with the Dingaal people, the traditional owners of Lizard Island, on ecological considerations, while interior tones were inspired by foraged leaves, stones and flowers.

The interiors also feature a curated collection of Aboriginal and Australian art, including works by Ilma Savari, Fiona Omeenyo and Susie Pascoe, alongside woven pieces by Dorothy Short and Tegan Murdock. Contemporary commissions, such as Alison Coates’ Sea Drifters and vessels by Anna Markey, further anchor the home in its cultural context.

The residence ultimately demonstrates how architecture, art and technology can coexist without compromise. For Fisher & Paykel, integration is not just an aesthetic choice but a way of supporting the rhythms of life in one of Australia’s most remarkable settings.
