Chevrolet remakes a legend with the Corvette E-Ray

Few are the cars that have had the cultural impact of the Chevrolet Corvette. Even in the age of electrification, the American icon has evolved with the best of them. The arrival of the fuel-efficient Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray feels like a natural conclusion. Arguably the marque’s most highly anticipated release to date, it has all the makings of a soon-to-be classic, from its hybrid powertrain to its new drive settings and even tyres.

Interestingly, the Corvette E-Ray makes use of electric propulsions that don’t need any charging at all. It doesn’t classify itself as an electric or hybrid vehicle, all the while delivering cutting-edge technology and an impressive acceleration that honors its high-octane history.

In terms of its styling cues, the Corvette E-Ray delivers a thrilling, athletic design with the Z06. This is evident in its wider exteriors, as well as its standard ground effects and spoiler. Exclusive E-Ray badges and unique alloys are complemented by the ability to personalise the model using its available palette. Owners may choose from 14 exterior colours, seven interior colour schemes and two seating options.

Much like its predecessor, the Corvette E-Ray retains the same powerful 6.2-litre V8 engine but with an additional electric drive unit on its front axle, which allows for more power, more torque and even faster acceleration.

The V8 engine delivers 369 kW of power and 637 Nm of torque; and when combined with the E-Ray’s electrified powertrain, the engine increases its output to 488 kW of power and 806 Nm of torque. It can easily accelerate from 0 to 97 km/h in just 2.5 seconds.

It should be noted that the Corvette E-Ray is also equipped with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, with both automatic and driver-focused manual modes. Complementing these are the carbon-ceramic brakes and an all-wheel drive system that provides exceptional grip, balance and precision whether on the road or track.

For its debut in Australia and New Zealand, the Corvette E-Ray exclusively comes in the standard high-performance ZER Performance Package. Drivers should be able to enjoy the high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, ZER Performance Suspension with Magnetic Ride Control and a taller spoiler wicker for track use.
