In 2005, Bugatti, under the Volkswagen Group, introduced the Veyron 16.4—a formidable hypercar that immediately garnered headlines as the world’s fastest production car at the time. Its 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine produced 1,001 horsepower, allowing it to reach a top speed of 408 km/h, surpassing previous record-holders, such as the McLaren F1 which had a top speed of just 386 km/h.

20 years later, the Bugatti Veyron is still one of the most iconic Bugatti models, which is why the marque honoured its 20th anniversary with an exclusive showcase at its Singapore showroom in Wearnes Tower on the 15th of October 2025. The event also displayed a lineup of Bugatti’s well-known supercars, including the Bolide, a track-only model, and limited-edition Chirons—like the all-black Chiron Noir and the two-toned, limited-edition Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti”.

The bell of the ball, of course, is the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, finished in silver blue. It was the first road-legal car to exceed the 400 km/h mark and featured what was then the world’s fastest dual-clutch gearbox. This record was then surpassed by one of its successors, the Bugatti Chiron Sport 300+ with a top speed of 490 km/h, and other brands like Koenigsegg’s Jesko Absolut, which has an estimated top speed of 531 km/h—considered the fastest car to date.

While the Veyron’s remarkable feat was its 16-cylinder, quad-turbocharged engines and impressive track performance, its aerodynamic technology was also noteworthy and a masterpiece at its own right.

The hypercar pioneered new standards in its aerodynamic performance and cooling efficiency, with a body primarily composed out of carbon fibre monocoque. In other special limited runs, Bugatti has also explored unconventional materials, like one with exterior body panels made of polished aluminium, milled in single blocks.

The Veyron was also equipped with ten radiators to provide sufficient cooling, including its classic horseshoe-shaped radiator front grille. At the rear, a retractable spoiler and wing system further improved its downforce and stability at high speeds. It also features Michelin tyres that cost USD $25,000 per set, which were custom developed for the supercar, capable to safely withstand its top speed, featuring a specialised, ultra-strong construction using a spirally wound polyamide cord called “Twaron”.

Following Veyron’s successful launch, other Bugatti models were introduced, including the targa top Grand Sport, Super Sport and Super Sport Vitesse, which brought even more power and a higher top speed.

A total of only 450 Veyrons were built, covering four variants and numerous special editions. And even after 20 years, it remains as one of the most influential hypercars ever created, cementing Bugatti’s legacy in the automotive world.
