The next-gen BMW M4 Coupé and Convertible are setting new benchmarks for the legacy series
Every now and then, BMW reminds us of why its M Model lineup is in a league of its own. Such is the case for the next-generation BMW M4 Coupé and Convertible, both of which maximise the best of advanced motor racing technology and aerodynamic functionality. Suffice it to say, these are vehicles made with the highest standards of performance in mind.
Its hulky, dense frame immediately sets the tone. This is complemented by that revamped mean mug (the vertical kidney grille), flared side sills with a contrasting high-gloss black finishes and modelled wheel arches. All of these are designed to not only create a striking visual presence but also to manage airflow even better than its predecessor.
Of all enhancements though, the series’ greatest innovation here lies in its new engine setup. The powerhouse straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo Technology (aided by 48V mild hybrid tech for improved efficiency and responsiveness) now comes in three performance levels. With the 480hp edition, the M4 Coupé enjoys a 6-speed manual transmission.
Meanwhile, the M4 Competition Coupé, with its 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, is even more impressive, considering its robust 510hp engine. On the other hand, the M xDrive system is where drivers can get the most dynamic driving and cornering. Here, it’s seamlessly integrated into the four-wheel drive variants.
Thanks to the advanced engine, the M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive, as well as the M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive, can both reach up to 530hp and a torque of 650Nm within an extended engine speed range of 2,750 and 5,730 rpm.
Of course, for the enthusiast, they might want to look into the M Race Track package, which takes its performance to the next level. The package comes with M Carbon ceramic brakes and M Carbon bucket seats, significantly reducing the weight of the vehicle by a decent 25 kg.
Customisation options are available for the M4 series, as well. Notably, the M Carbon exterior package doubles down on key racing features, adding further inserts, mirror caps and even a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFP) rear spoiler. Retrofit options, for those who want a more vintage look, offer things like the M Performance forged wheels and other CFP elements.
