The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique returns in a sleek, new form

In June 2025, Swiss watch maison Blancpain globally launched five new iterations of its iconic diver’s watch—the Fifty Fathoms Automatique Collection—a smaller, more compact format that stays true to its deep-sea roots.

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms holds the (disputed) claim of being the world’s first diving watch, developed in response to a challenge issued by the French navy to watchmakers Rolex, Zenith and Blancpain in the 1950s. With its unidirectional bezel, automatic movement, and (for that time) a generously sized 41 mm case, it embodied the brand’s pioneering spirit and technical mastery. Initially adopted by military forces around the world, the Fifty Fathoms only became widely available to the public in 2007. Since then, multiple reissues have been launched, each one faithfully paying homage to the many variations produced during its storied military service.

In 2023, Blancpain released the Fifty Fathoms Automatique Collection, a wearable, comfortable, daily companion for the modern keyboard warrior.

First launched in 42mm and 45mm, the timepiece now finally available in a more wearable 38mm size, reflective of this era’s desire for smaller timepieces.

Launched in an exclusive event in Sydney, Australia, collectors and watch enthusiasts witnessed the new series in five distinct versions—two of which are geared towards women.

The first iteration features a polished stainless-steel case with a matching black dial and black bezel, which is inspired by the original 1953 Fifty Fathoms. The second variant offers a more modern take with its new blue dial and bezel, as well as a satin-brushed grade 23 titanium case. While another iteration presents a sophisticated and warm aesthetic, thanks to its 18-carat red gold case, paired with a blue dial and bezel.

On the other hand, the two iterations of the Fifty Fathoms Automatique Collection designed with women in mind stand out for their refined elegance and subtle nod to Blancpain’s heritage of craftsmanship. Each features a luminous mother-of-pearl dégradé dial that catches the light with every movement—offered in a deep, sophisticated black or a soft, romantic pink. The black version pairs its dial with a matching black bezel and is housed in a polished 18-carat red gold case, adding warmth and a luxurious contrast to its sporty silhouette. Meanwhile, the pink version comes with a matching pink bezel set in a brushed grade 23 titanium case, whose subtle greyish tone enhances the dial’s fresh, youthful vibe.

All five timepieces boast technical precision, thanks to its calibre 1150 or 1153 movement, with a 100-hour power reserve. Beating at 3 Hz, this automatic movement benefits from a silicon balance spring for superior anti-magnetic performance—a helpful feature for divers underwater.
