The Palm Residence
Palm Beach, Waiheke Island
Nestled behind a pristine white-sand beach, this luxurious retreat designed by renowned architect Andrew Patterson has expansive grounds and private pavilions for both lively gatherings and slower days.
The driveway sets the scene, winding deep through native bush, past a working apiary, before opening onto a line of olive trees and a widening sweep of lawn fringed by the towering palms that give the estate its name. A long zip line runs down one side, a shingled lodge sits tucked to the other, and beyond them, a full-size tennis court with a basketball hoop sits between a pair of aloe trees. The house waits at the far end of it all, lightly brutalist and clad in timber, wrapping a heated pool and courtyard lawn in one long U.
The two guest wings and family pavilion are designed for versatility, with bedrooms and bunk rooms opening into shared living and kitchenette spaces, or closing off to give each group their own kitchenette, dining table, and lounge. Wherever you land, the gabled roofline is pitched high enough to pull the sea into view, and the pool is never more than a few steps away, shaded by a grove of mulberry trees with a treehouse the kids will vanish into for the rest of the afternoon.
The main house closes the loop. Acid-patinated bronze doors open onto a master suite with its own sea-facing terrace, and into a vast, double-height lounge and dining room bookended by fireplaces. The kitchen pairs Wolf appliances with acid-patina cabinetry and a marbled stone island, its serving window folding back almost entirely onto a concrete barbecue and dining terrace. From there, the lawn sweeps straight down to the estate’s private, palm-fringed beach.
